Cold War Overview Review

How did the Cold War begin at the Yalta conference? At Yalta in 45 Stalin, FDR and the British agreed that Germany would be divided into four occupation zones and that all of the countries the Red Army occupied would have free elections

Why did Truman think the Soviets were a threat after Potsdam? Churchill saying an iron curtain had descended on Europe

Describe the Truman Doctrine: The Truman Doctrine is the beginnings of the policy of containment which meant the US would prevent the spread of communism past Eastern Europe.

Describe the Marshall Plan: 13 billion in grants and loans to Western Europe in order for them to recover, buy supplies that were in short supply, and help prevent the problems that lead some to communism

Describe the Berlin Airlift: In order to deliver supplies, Truman airlifts them forcing Stalin to back off his attempts for West Berlin in May of 49

Describe NATO: In 49; US, GB, and twelve other Nations formed NATO to defend Western Europe

Describe the Warsaw Pact: In response Soviets form the Warsaw Pact with other Eastern European countries

Describe Ike’s strategy in the Cold War: spending billions of dollars on conventional forces and instead favored building mass armory of nuclear weapons

Describe the Bay of Pigs the invasion which fails miserably partially because of JFK’s reluctance to use US planes

Describe the Cuban Missile Crisis: US intelligence discovers that the Soviets were building nuclear weapons sites in Cuba

Describe attempts to limit communist after World War 2 at home: the US gov took action against the communist through the Smith act which made it illegal to teach the overthrow of the government

Describe Joe McCarthy and what he did: In 54 McCarthy went after the army which led Senate to hold televised hearing that gave many their first taste of McCarthy’s style leading him to lose many supporters and for the Senate to censure him

The Home Front and Effects of the War Review

How did women participate in the war? Many women had to go to work in order to meet production goals

How did African Americans participate in the war? Many African Americans hoped war would open opportunities but few found meaningful work and when they did were still segregated

Describe how Americans treated German, Italian, and Japanese Americans: Japanese Americans faced worse treatment because of racism, smaller numbers, lack of political clout, and isolation from others

Describe Life in the Internment Camps: they were very populated and food was short

Describe what the US gov did to control Information and Industry: Office of War Info- worked closely with media to support war effort and published pro war materials like posters

Describe the Effects of WWII: World Map changes with splitting up of German and Italian empire

Imperialism goes on the decline US and USSR step in as superpowers US takes on shaping the world economy


The Holocaust Review

What problems did the Germans have that Hitler blamed on the Jews? Really just everything, communism, inflation, abstract painting, and German loss in WWI

Describe the first persecution of Jews in Germany: boycott of Jewish goods and keeping Jews from jobs in civil service, the stock exchange, banking, law, journalism, and medicine

What is Kristallnacht? Germans attack on Jewish people which included destruction of Jewish businesses and synagogues, death of 200 Jewish people, and thousands of Jews arrested

Describe life in both the death and concentration camps: life in both of the camps was hard but different. In the concentrations camps

Describe the allied response to the Holocaust: Soldiers who had seen lots of death were unprepared and stunned by what they saw

Liberation of camps led to outpouring of support and aid to survivors

Civil War Part 6 Review

What did Union do when came across African Americans early in the war?

What is Emancipation Proclamation?
When Lincoln frees the slaves in America


Why does Lincoln issue proclamation?
To free the slaves


What effect does proclamation have?
It causes mixed feelings in the north and convinces south there will be no peace treaty


How African Americans participated in the war:
Some did manual labor some were actually fighting in the war. Slaves provided aids and even spied for union troops


Describe Life in North during War:
Tough due to lack of cotton


Describe Life in South During War:
Poverty stricken and riot filled


Describe Life of Soldiers during the War:
They experienced travel and filled there free time with religion and card games

Describe Life of Women during the War:
Many tended to the farms and plantations some acted as men to fight in the army

Bell Ringer:
At first we didn’t fight to liberate the slaves we fought to unite the North and South but now they fought for freedom.

Describe how Lincoln’s election splits the Union:
The southern sates left after Lincoln’s election because Lincoln supported antislavery and they felt they had no voice in the union.

Describe how the South reacts to the election of Lincoln:
The south succeeds from the north and elects there own president

Describe the founding of the Confederate government:
After the confederacy split from the north Jefferson Davis was elected and president of the confederacy. The government also boasted more power in the states instead of more power in government

Describe the breakout of the war at Fort Sumter:
Lincoln needed to bring his troops provisions while the south didn’t trust him sending ships to the fort. When asked to surrender the soldiers at Sumter said no and were attacked.

Describe the advantages of the South:
Leadership, GB and French support, can play defense if attacked on southern ground

Describe Northern Strategies to win the War: Block off southern ports and march into southern states and destroy major factories

Describe Southern Strategies to win the war:
Play defense on southern territory and weaken union slowly
Radical Republican- After the 1860 elections the Radical Republicans became a powerful force in Congress. Several were elected as chairman of important committees.

Wade-Davis bill- By Senator Benjamin F. Wade and Representative Henry Winter Davis ... The Wade-Davis Bill required that 50 percent of a state's white males take a loyalty oath

Freedman’s Bureau- Freedmen's Bureau is a U.S. agency established during Reconstruction to help freed slaves in their transition to freedom

Andrew Johnson- Andrew Johnson. With the Assassination of Lincoln, the Presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southern Jacksonian Democrat of pronounced states' rights views.

Fourteenth Amendment- Rights Guaranteed Privileges and Immunities of Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection

Fifteenth amendment- to the United States Constitution prohibits each government in the United States from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race
